12.02.2016. The Institute of Hydrobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine celebrated its 75th anniversary. The Institute of Hydrobiology, is the continuation of the formerly Hydro-biological Station, founded in 1940 on the initiative of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (the decision of Academy from March 13, 1939) – The Decree of the Peoples’ Commissars Council of the UkrSSR № 696, of May 23, 1940. It is one of the oldest hydro-biological Institute across Europe to study the freshwater ecosystems. In 1940, the Hydro-biological Station, is based on Dnieper Station (1909), had skilled researchers and materials in the different fields of water studies of Kiev area. Professors, Keppen M.O., Holodnyj M.G. (since 1929 – the academician of Ukraine), Beling D.E., were in charge of the Station at different times. Vernadsky V.I., the founder and first President of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, worked for some time at the Station.
Roll Ja.V., corresponding member of the Academy of Ukraine, was the first director of the Institute of Hydrobiology (1940 to 1959). Academician Topachevsky O.V. (1959-1973), Dr. Sirenko L.J. (1974-1975) and Dr. Maljuk V.I. (1975-1979) headed the Institute of Hydrobiology. Since 1979 and up to now, the Academician of Ukraine Romanenko VD is the director of the Institute of Hydrobiology. 20.01.2016. The book “Estuarine Ecohydrology”, second edition, was published in August 2015.
Authors:
Professor Eric Wolanski of the James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (Australia)
Professor Michael Elliott of the Institute of Estuarine & Coastal Studies (IECS) and of Estuarine and Coastal Sciences at the University of Hull (U.K.)
From viewpoint of ecohydrology are discussed the functioning of estuarine ecosystems in which interact complex physical and biological processes. The understanding of these processes makes it possible to control the anthropogenic loading in ecosystems for the purpose of maintaining and restoring them when necessary. The presented theoretical, modelling and practical decisions serve as the important tool in management of ecological stability of estuaries.
