Ecosystem services seminar presentations available online
ECNC’s Ben Delbaere presented the OpenNESS project is now available on the Eurosite website, along with the PowerPoint presentations and brief summaries of the other keynote speeches during the first day of the annual meeting.
Brioni supports Healthy Seas
Italian menswear brand Brioni is providing support the Healthy Seas Initiative through the sale of sustainable notebooks in selected Brioni stores worldwide; 50% of the proceeds of the notebook sales will be donated to the initiative.
Video message by Commissioner Vella in support of Healthy Seas
The Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Mr Karmenu Vella, has agreed to become an official Healthy Seas ambassador. He confirmed this by recording a video statement, underlining his active support for the work Healthy Seas does.

New French Agency for Biodiversity
The French Agency for Biodiversity (AFB) became operational on 1 January 2017. The Agency brings together four existing organizations and comes under the Ministry of the Environment.

UN Biodiversity Conference
At the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cancun, Mexico, in December 2016, agreements were reached on actions to achieve the 2030.

ALTER-Net team publishes paper on nature-based solutions
A team drawn ALTER-Net partner organizations (including ECNC) has published a paper that considers the implications for science, policy and practice of the recently introduced concept of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).

EU publishes starter’s guide to environmental directives
The EU has produced a starter’s guide to the main provisions of the five EU environmental directives: the Habitats Directive, the Birds Directive, the Water Framework Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and the Floods Directive.
2017 – International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
The United Nations General Assembly has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, with some of its key areas focusing on resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change.
ALTER-Net Conference 2017: Nature and society: synergies, conflicts, trade-offs
2-5 May 2017, Ghent, Belgium
The conference will be a meeting place for scientists from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, local, regional and EU level policymakers and NGOs.
